We are thrilled to announce that construction on Alex Decoteau Park starts this summer. Join Mayor Don Iveson, Councillor Scott McKeen, community members and descendants of Alex Decoteau as we celebrate this milestone.

As our Fort McMurray friends cope with tremendous loss, lets show them Edmonton’s hospitality and support by gathering for a pancake breakfast fundraiser.

Spring Clean-Up 2016

Join us for our Annual Spring Clean-Up on Sunday, May 1, 2016 as part of the Capital City Clean-Up Program and the River Valley Clean-Up. A great way to help clean up your community and enjoy some time outdoors!

Meet us at the DECL Community Space (10042 103 Street) at 10am for coffee. We will have cleaning supplies, please wear appropriate work clothes and bring work gloves if you have them.

We will focus our efforts in the areas and streets around DECL and down the valley around McKay Avenue School.

Urban Kids Playgroup Starts March 7

Parents and caregivers and their children, ages 0 – 5, are invited to attend the first Urban Kids Playgroup on Monday, March 7 at the DECL Community Space (10042 103 St. NW). Drop in between 10:30am and noon.

Come play and meet new friends downtown!

DECL Memberships will be available for purchase for $5 if you aren’t a member already. $5 gives you membership for the whole family!

Mark your calendars – Urban Kids Playgroup will occur every two weeks, same time, same place!

Programs Chair Position Available

We are looking to fill a vacancy on our board of directors for the volunteer position of Programs Director. Programs Director is responsible for organizing events and developing and curating on-going programming at our Community Space.

Position Title: Programs Director /Event Coordinator

Authority

  • The board of directors is the legal authority for the Downtown Edmonton Community League (“DECL”).

Term of Office

  • Term of office is 2 years.
  • Weekly time commitment of 3-4 hours.

General Duties/Requirements

  • A director is expected to be fully informed on community league matters and participate in discussions and decisions in matters of policy, finance, programs, personnel and advocacy.
  • Commit to the work of the organization.
  • Review the board’s conduct and monitor its performance to ensure compliance with bylaws and policies.
  • Speak positively of the league and assist in developing and maintaining positive relations among the board, committees and communities to enhance the league’s mission.
  • Orient new board members.
  • Prepare for and arrive on time for all required meetings.
  • Develop, monitor, review and approve all policies and other recommendations received from the board, its standing committees and staff.
  • Review the bylaws and recommend changes to the membership.
  • Participate in the development of the league’s organizational plan, annual review and budget.
  • Approve the budget and other financial matters.
  • Prepare and present required reports at board meetings.
  • Prepare and present an annual report at the annual general meeting.

Responsibilities of PROGRAMS DIRECTOR

  • Works with the City Community Recreation Coordinators (CRCs).
  • Is Chair of the Programs Committee and works with the other members of that committee
  • Prepares and reviews policy and procedures related to programs and social activities
  • Is “point person” or main contact for DECL’s main events/membership drives, the Pancake Breakfast and Cornfest, as well as smaller events.
  • Determines which programs will be offered to the community, then arranges for instructors and accommodation.
  • Establishes process for approving new programming proposals
  • Makes recommendations to the board.
  • Coordinates marketing of events with Communications Chair
  • Coordinates rental of DECL space with Facilities Coordinator
  • Prepares budget and financial reports for the treasurer
  • Arranges payments to instructors and keeps appropriate records.

Holiday Mixer – December 10

Join us for DECL’s annual Holiday Mixer, a time for downtown residents and community league members to celebrate living downtown and meet other members of your neighbourhood. A time to be merry!

We will also be collecting donations of winter clothes – touques, gloves, scarves, new socks – for Boyle Street Community Services. Bring your unused winter clothes items to help decorate our tree!

Regular General Meeting – November 19

Join us for another General Meeting for DECL members. We will be getting together to discuss the on-going business of the league and downtown issues at large.

It’s your chance to find out what’s going on in your community, share your thoughts, questions, and ideas, and meet your neighbours!

Representatives from Edmonton Public Library will be on hand to discuss upcoming evolution of the Stanley A. Milner Library. Boyle Street Community Services will also be discussing the services they provide and potential expansion plans.

We will also be presenting updated bylaws for DECL. Small text changes were made to the bylaws of 2012 to conform with requirements set out by Service Alberta. Updating these bylaws will allow us to apply for further funding opportunities such as a casino license.

$5 2015-2016 DECL Memberships will be available at the door. Light refreshments & cash bar will be available.

Alex Decoteau Park Update Meeting

We will be hosting a Park Committee night Wednesday, October 14 from 6:00 – 7:30 pm at our office, 10042-103st.

We will be reviewing everything to date for the development of Alex Decoteau Park (NW corner of 105 St & 102 Ave), organizing working committees for the community garden and off leash dog areas, as well as creating a steering committee to oversee the development and operation of the park. Please feel free to drop in and join the group!
