Reclaiming Lost Spaces/Alley of Light Open House
Sunday December 05, 2010
Enterprise Square
10230 Jasper Avenue, Main Floor Atrium from 2 to 4 pm
For nine months nearly 40 individuals from the 104 Street area, including residents, businesses, and interested individuals have been working on continuing the vibrancy of the 104 Street area by imagining how this space can be transformed.

Come to the Open House, view some of their ideas- and add your own - as they take the next steps to formalize a final design and begin its implementation.

Reclaiming Lost Spaces
the public offered suggestions on how to revitalize two forgotten urban spaces in downtown Edmonton. The group toured these spaces in the 104 Street Area, reflecting on how they could be reclaimed to meet their full potential and re-imagining them as vibrant, engaging places. The alley from Beaver Hills Park to 103 Avenue was chosen to move forward with the redesign process. A smaller working group has been meeting regularly since the design charette to continue work on this project. For more information, contact howie.phung (at) ualberta.ca

Public Hearing on Downtown Plan (CCDP) Zoning changes.
Monday, December 13 at 1:30 pm, City Council Chambers
DECL has worked closely as a key stakeholder in this update process. Please consider speaking for these changes, as they will complete a long, multi-year process towards a new 10-year downtown plan for downtown. Moving forward, please also consider asking Council to provide funding to start many of the catalyst projects proposed for downtown!
Click HERE for the letter of support to council

Update, December 13, 2010
The new downtown plan zoning passed this afternoon. There was a bit of debate on a few minor points brought up by a development representative, but we are happy to report it passed with one slight amendment (to review the residential/commercial mix in the CCA in 48 months), but passed unanimously otherwise! Thanks to everyone that has been involved in this process. Chris Buyze been personally involved in this for over 5 years, and it's our first new plan/zoning since 1997. "A step forward for downtown!"

We need Edmonton Live in our arena district, not L.A. Live plunked down in Edmonton
By David Staples
Edmonton Journal, Friday, Nov 5 2010
If the design is right -- if it really transforms Edmonton -- the arena district should proceed. But that is one big if . . .

Ian O'Donnell is the chair of the Development Committee for Downtown Edmonton Community League. It's a big title but it's also a crucial job right now, as O'Donnell is already becoming one of the most influential critics of the Katz Group's arena district plan.

O'Donnell is one of a large group of downtown boosters who recognizes the tremendous potential for the district, but who has so far been unimpressed with one of the main aspects of the Katz Group's plan, the notion of putting a massive pedway over the traffic chasm of 104th Avenue. The pedway would bridge the arena on the north side of the avenue with the restaurants, shops and hotels of the downtown proper on the south side.

PARK SURVEY
DECL is excited to release an online survey regarding our future park
, located on the "Scott Property" at the NW corner of 105 Street and 102 Avenue. We have formed a steering committee of local stakeholders to drive this process towards the eventual development of this site as our future Warehouse Campus park for the residents of this area! If we could take a few minutes of your time to fill out this survey, it would be most appreciated. The most important part of this process is gathering feedback from residents and other interested citizens about how this park should function and the features it should carry: www.surveymonkey.com/s/W3DKT6D

The survey will be online until November 15. If you have any questions about this park or the process towards development, please contact president@decl.org We are planning some exciting activities for the Scott Property over the winter, so stay tuned.

NEWS FOR JULY 2010
Please fill out this survey:
Responsible Hospitality Edmonton wants to find out what people think of the Jasper Avenue nightlife experience and what suggestions they have for improvement. Edmontonians are being asked to take the five minute Jasper Avenue Nightlife Survey
online at
https://toybox.touchmetric.com/take_survey/918. The survey runs July 2-16.

Marketing teams will also conduct the survey on Jasper Avenue during the evenings of July 8, 9 and 10 from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., using the iPhone and iPod touch instead of the traditional paper and clipboard. Responsible Hospitality Edmonton and the Jasper Avenue Entertainment Working Group will make recommendations to City Council based on the survey results. The findings will be posted at
www.responsiblehospitalityedmonton.ca by the end of July.

Responsible Hospitality Edmonton works with other groups to plan, police, and manage hospitality zones throughout Edmonton. Since 2006, Whyte Avenue initiatives such as Street as a Venue, the Public Safety Compliance Team, public washrooms, and the Save the Party education campaign for bar patrons, developed and implemented with community partners, have increased vibrancy and decreased crime and disorder in the area. This work serves as a model for the efforts now underway downtown.

Pothole Repairs and Street Sweeping
Clean up of Edmonton’s 4,700 km of major roads, residential streets, alleyways and boulevards takes approximately nine weeks for crews to complete. At the same time, pothole crews will begin filling and patching potholes; over the course of the spring maintenance program, between 450,000 and 470,000 potholes will be fixed.

Although Roadway Maintenance tries to find and fix as many potholes as possible, motorists are also asked to let the City of Edmonton know about issues by reporting potholes through 3-1-1 or online at
