OCTOBER 2008
Lois Knight has stepped down as DECL President after a long and busy sojourn on the board. We thank her for her hard work and dedication and wish her the very best. Chris Buyze will replace her as President and Thomas Rose will step in as Vice-President until March 2009.

The City of Edmonton is hosting Town Hall meetings across the city to discuss residents' priorities and issues and challenges facing Edmontonians.
Ward 4 Town Halls will take place at these locations:

DECL held a community gathering and meet & greet on Wednesday, October 22 at 7 pm at the Downtown YMCA. Colton Kirsop gave an informative presentation on the new Downtown plan. After the presentation, everyone enjoyed a short meet and greet which gave some new members a chance to meet the board and ask questions.
Colton announced that he will be hosting a workshop session at the YMCA next Tuesday Oct 28 from 6-8 pm. This event is open to the public and we hope that there will be a good turnout as this is to discuss the pros and cons of turning 104 street into a walking street, and may affect many people and businesses in the area.

COMMUNITY SWIM PARTY:
A small but enthusiastic group came out for the DECL's first community swim party. Look for another mid-winter.

The City Market on 104 Street held its last market for the season on October 11. DECL has had a booth there on several Saturdays this year and we are pleased to welcome over 200 new members since the beginning of September.
SEPTEMBER 2008
DOWNTOWN COMMUNITY SWIM:
DECL is hosting a membership swim party the YMCA on September 28.
Come out for snacks and an opportunity to meet other members and familiarize yourself with the facility. The FREE community swim time at the downtown YMCA is 4:45 to 6:45 pm every Sunday. You do not need a YMCA membership to take part but must have your DECL membership card with you for entry.


2008 AUTUMN CORN FEST
DECL handed out over 600 ears of corn at the Autumn Corn Fest in Beaver Hills Park on September 06, 2008. Welcome to over 60 new members, kudos to Thomas Rose & Rachel Melnychuk for organising this great community event and a very warm thank-you to all of the board members and volunteers who helped out.

Additional thanks to our sponsors: the corn was generously donated by Sobeys Urban Fresh and the following gave us support materials and items for our draw baskets: ALBERTA Solicitor General and Community Safety; Ben Henderson, Ward Four; College Copy Shops, Don Wheaton Family YMCA, La Tapa Restaurant, Laurie Blakeman, MLA; MacEwan Centre for Health & Wellness, Mothers Music, Rigoletto's Cafe, Woolsey Design and Westin Hotels and Resorts.

OUR URBAN EDEN COMMUNITY BARBEQUE AND OPEN HOUSE
Join the gardeners Saturday August 16 from 5 to 9 pm for their annual open house and barbeque. Enjoy pot-luck fare, good company and draw prizes for gardeners and guests.

JULY 2008

ACTIVITIES IN THE SQUARE
Take in Taste of Edmonton on the Square downtown. Make sure you pick up a festival brochure -- it contains a full listing of food and drink along with an entertainment schedule for both stages.

Enjoy great live entertainment from the west square seating or from the Taste Patio which offers new coolers from Bacardi and beers from Alley Kat Brewing, Amber Brewing, Molson and Sleeman. Headliners include The Commitments, The Retrofitz, Top Ten Show and Revue, The Lost Boys, Nick Gilder and Sweeny Todd, Kym Simon, Texx tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughn, Chillilwack, The Classics and Shane Yellowbird.

The
Taste of Wine tent offers a smaller stage with six choices of wine daily and excellent entertainment from the likes of Terry McDade, Torben Holm Pedersen, Marco Claveria, Don Yuzwenko, Donovan Reimer and more.

Night of Artists is located in Churchill Square along with A Taste of Edmonton Street Market. July 20 is Sunday in the City which features The Avenue of Cars Show and Shine and a wide variety of activities. July 27 is Aboriginal Day with music, traditional dance, art displays and hands-on activities.

DEVELOPMENT APPLICATION:
A Public Meeting for the following application will be held on July 17, 2008 at the McKay Avenue School from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm:

LDA07-0516 is a proposed HDR to DC2 rezoning and Capital City Area Redevelopment Plan amendment application for properties located at: 10406, 10410 - 97 Avenue and 9714, 9718 104 Street. The applicant's intent is to develop a residential apartment within the McKay Avenue Area. The amendment proposes to increase the maximum height from 45m to 101.5m (31 Storeys), to increase the maximum floor area ratio from 4.0 to 10.0, and to increase the maximum density from 500 to 711 dwelling units per hectare.

The Bellamy Hill plots have been allocated for the 2008 season. The garden has postponed their June 30 gathering and will be hosting an open house in July.

SAFETY CONCERNS
Theft from vehicles continues to be a problem. Please do not leave change or valuables in your car. Panhandling is becoming increasingly aggressive in Oliver Square and on Jasper Avenue. Please contact the Community Liaison Constable at brooks.nyszczuk@police.edmonton.ab.ca about aggressive or repeat offenders.

OUR URBAN EDEN COMMUNITY GARDEN
Many of the people who'd applied for Our Urban Eden community garden plots have e-mail or telephones no longer in service. The garden has made every effort to contact those who'd applied earlier in the year and all plots have now been assigned for this season.



APRIL 2008
EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE
The Jaywalking bylaw has been amended and the fine is rising from $40 to $250. The city will be doing some education defining Jaywalking but in the meantime be sure to cross at crosswalks. The City of Edmonton website has listings of all of the Bylaws. www.edmonton.ca

Panhandling has become a priority with the warm weather starting; the most common location receiving complaints from is the Oliver Square area. Resources are being put in place to help with this problem. Some of the more aggressive panhandlers have been identified and appropriate action is being looked into. Please contact the Community Liaison Constable at brooks.nyszczuk@police.edmonton.ab.ca about aggressive or repeat offenders.
