DECL held a community
gathering and meet & greet on Wednesday, October 22 at 7 pm at the Downtown YMCA. Colton Kirsop gave an informative presentation on
the new Downtown plan. After the presentation, everyone enjoyed a short meet and greet which gave some new members
a chance to meet the board and ask questions.
Colton announced that he
will be hosting a workshop session at the YMCA next Tuesday Oct 28 from 6-8 pm. This event is open to the public and we hope that there will be a
good turnout as this is to discuss the pros and cons of turning 104 street into a walking street, and may affect
many people and businesses in the area.
COMMUNITY SWIM PARTY:
A small but enthusiastic group came out for the DECL's first community swim party. Look for another mid-winter.
The City Market on 104 Street
held its last market for the season on October 11.
DECL has had a booth there
on several Saturdays this year and we are pleased to welcome over 200 new members since the beginning of September.
2008 AUTUMN CORN FEST
DECL handed out over 600
ears of corn at the Autumn Corn Fest in Beaver Hills Park on September 06, 2008. Welcome to over 80 new members,
kudos to Thomas Rose & Rachel Melnychuk, organisers of great community event and a very warm thank-you to board
members Chris Buyze, Lois Knight, Avril Magara, Graeme Smith and the volunteers who helped out.
Additional thanks to our sponsors: the corn was generously donated by Sobeys Urban Fresh and the following gave
us support materials and items for our draw baskets: ALBERTA Solicitor General and Community Safety; Ben Henderson,

EDMONTON POLICE SERVICE &
SAFETY CONCERNS
The Jaywalking bylaw has been amended and the fine has risen from $40 to $250. The
city will be doing some education defining Jaywalking but in the meantime be sure to cross at crosswalks. The City
of Edmonton website has listings of all of the Bylaws. www.edmonton.ca
Parking Passes have been offered to many people at downtown
lots -- these tickets are usually bought with a stolen credit card or a credit card that has been obtained fraudulently.
Please do not purchase these as you are contributing to the continuing problem and increasing personal safety risks
at these locations (vehicle break-ins, aggressive panhandlers, etc.) If you are approached, please report the incident
to the police.
Theft from vehicles continues to be a problem. Please do
not leave change or valuables in your car.
Panhandling is becoming increasingly aggressive in Oliver
Square and on Jasper Avenue. Please contact the Community Liaison Constable at brooks.nyszczuk@police.edmonton.ab.ca
about aggressive or repeat offenders.
