Love Alberta Arts Valentine's Day Flash Mob
Monday February 14th at 12:30pm
Edmonton City Centre EAST Mall Food Court
Why? The Professional Arts Coalition of Edmonton (PACE) of which SNAP is a member is spearheading a campaign that we are hoping will go viral across Alberta through the involvement of arts organizations and professional artists in our province. The campaign started in anticipation of the 2011 provincial budget with the memory of last year’s 16 per cent cuts still fresh in our minds. As you know, another cut like the one endured last year – or worse – will surely mean the death of many valued and innovative arts and culture organizations in our province. This year, it is our goal to work in a concerted fashion to influence the government and people of Alberta that further cuts to Alberta’s arts and culture sector will hurt the entire province. For more information about other ways to get involved check out the PACE website.

  Art Gallery of Alberta
The Far Shore
The Far Shore is a consummate expression of Joyce Wieland’s artistic sensibility, a gorgeous painterly film, formal in conception, deliberate in its flagrant symbolism (the rigid imposition of WASP power on French-Canadian culture) and portrayal of Canadian myths (the mystery of Tom Thomson’s drowning in Algonquin Park), and exuding romantic naturalism. This northern love story, rooted in the landscape of the Group of Seven and the realities of the Canadian experience, is a tale of passion both carnal and artistic.
Rarely screened, this is a special opportunity to view, in Robert Fulford’s words, one of the “most densely Canadian movies ever made.”

Alberta Craft Council
10186 - 106 Street
The 16% Exhibition
Date: Saturday, January 15, 2011 - Saturday, March 26, 2011
Alberta’s arts sector and its supporters were shocked last spring to hear rumours, and then announcements, of huge funding cuts. The provincial government chose to cut $5.5 million or 16% of the entire resources of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. The Craft Council lost $37,000 or 16% from its 2010-11 core grant. The Craft Council Board has decided to demonstrate this cut, as visibly and shockingly as possible, with “The 16% Exhibition”.

From January 15 to March 26, this exhibition in the Craft Council’s Feature Gallery in Edmonton will be empty. Plinths will be in place. Lights will be on. Labels will tell the story of 16%, and how this affects the arts. Gallery visitors will be asked to participate, by contributing their thoughts, and by sending message cards to the Premier and MLAs.
